Maryland Weather Forecast: Nor'easter Brings High Winds, Rain

The National Weather Service says a Nor'easter will bring strong winds, some reaching 40 mph, on Monday plus plenty of rain.

BALTIMORE, MD — Maryland will be buffeted with heavy rains and wind Monday as a powerful "Nor'easter" storm moves across the state. For weather updates and all your local news, click here to subscribe to the free Patch newsletter and Breaking News Alerts.

Winds are forecasted to reach 15 to 25 mph all day with gusts up to 45 mph. The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory — calling for scattered power outages, downed tree limbs and fallen power lines — Monday for much of Maryland. A wind advisory means that 45 to 55 mph winds are possible and can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, according to the weather service.

The wind advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. Monday for the District of Columbia, Carroll, Baltimore, Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Montgomery, Howard, and Harford counties. This includes the cities of: Washington, Baltimore, Eldersburg, Westminster, Reisterstown, Cockeysville, Bowie, Suitland, Clinton, College Park, Greenbelt, Laurel, Camp Springs, Glen Burnie, Annapolis, Severn, South Gate, Severna Park, Arnold, Odenton, Germantown, Damascus, Bethesda, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring, Lisbon, Columbia, Ellicott City, Jarrettsville, and Aberdeen.

The Maryland Transportation Authority has issued wind warnings for the Bay, Hatem, Key and Tydings bridges on Monday, Jan. 23. Winds of 30 to 39 mph trigger wind warnings, transportation officials say.

Forecasters say the heaviest rain is expected through 2 p.m.

11 a.m.: 71 percent chance of rain, winds 21 mph

2 p.m: 74 percent chance of rain, winds 16 mph

5 p.m.: 60 percent chance of rain, winds 16 mph

8 p.m.: 59 percent chance of rain, winds 16 mph

11 p.m.: 59 percent chance of rain, winds 13 mph

5 a.m. Tuesday: 48 percent chance of rain, winds 13 mph

8 a.m. Tuesday: 20 percent chance of rain, winds 15 mph

On Tuesday rain showers dry up by the afternoon and the sun will come out. Here's a look ahead to the rest of the work week.

  • Tuesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 35. Northwest wind 6 to 14 mph.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 56. South wind 5 to 9 mph.
  • Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 43.
  • Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 51.
  • Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 34.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 45.
