Maryland Weather Warning: 60 MPH Winds Expected Sunday Night, Monday

A high wind warning for much of Maryland starts Sunday night and runs through Monday; phone numbers to report power outages.

(Updated at 11:55 a.m. Sunday) The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning that goes into effect at 11 p.m. Sunday and runs through 6 p.m. Monday for the Baltimore and Washington, DC, region. Much of Maryland is expected to see strong winds develop late Sunday evening and persist through Monday. The strongest winds will be overnight through Monday morning from the northwest at 25 to 35 mph with gusts of 50 to 60 mph, the weather service says.

Strong winds may blow down limbs, trees and power lines, the weather service warned. Scattered power outages are expected, according to the weather service. If you suffer a power outage, the numbers to call are:

A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Wind gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.

Communities included in the watch area: Baltimore, Prince George's, Anne Arundel, Montgomery, Howard and Harford counties, plus the cities of Baltimore, Eldersburg, Westminster, Reisterstown, Cockeysville, Bowie, Suitland-Silver Hill, Clinton, College Park, Greenbelt, Laurel, Camp Springs, Glen Burnie, Annapolis, Severn, South Gate, Severna Park, Arnold, Odenton, Germantown, Damascus, Bethesda, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring, Columbia, Ellicott City, Jarrettsville, and Aberdeen.

Here's a more detailed look at the forecast, from the National Weather Service:

  • Saturday night: A chance of showers after 1 a.m. Cloudy, with a low around 46. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.
  • Sunday: Showers. High near 65. East wind 7 to 10 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
  • Sunday night: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 37. Breezy, with a northwest wind 15 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph.
  • Monday: Sunny, with a high near 45. Windy, with a northwest wind 22 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph.
  • Monday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 29. Northwest wind 8 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.
