One Killed In Collision In Edgewater: Report

An Annapolis woman died and a St. Leonard woman was critically injured in a Friday morning accident between a car and minivan in Edgewater.

UPDATE: The Anne Arundel County Police Department released the names Friday of three motorists involved in a fatal collision during the morning rush hour in Edgewater. An Annapolis woman died in the accident on Solomons Island Road (Route 2) and a St. Leonard woman was critically injured, the police said in a statement.

The police responded at 6:26 a.m. to the collision on Route 2 near Virginia Avenue. They said that a Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Heather Marie Waibel, 44, of Annapolis was heading southbound on Solomons Island Road when she lost control and swerved in front of a northbound Toyota Sienna minivan driven by Jessica Ann Lewis, 38, of St. Leonard.

The minivan struck the car broadside and then sideswiped a Lincoln Navigator SUV, which also was northbound on Route 2. The SUV was driven by Mitasia Da Quiera Lanman, 20, of Grasonville, the police said.

Waibel, the driver of the Mitsubishi, was pronounced dead at the scene by Anne Arundel fire and rescue personnel and was taken to a medical examiner in Baltimore, the police said.

Lewis, the minivan driver, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken in critical condition to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, the police said.

Lanman, the SUV driver, was not injured. The police are investigating the accident.

EDGEWATER, MD — The Anne Arundel County police are investigating the scene of a fatal accident that occurred Friday morning in Edgewater, according to a media report. County firefighters responded at about 6:30 a.m. to the report of a collision in the area of Solomons Island Road and Virginia Avenue, the Capital Gazette reported.

The collision involved a minivan and a two-door car, which flipped onto its roof, the newspaper reported.

One person was declared dead at the scene of the collision, a fire department spokesman told the Capital Gazette.

A 40-year-old woman who was pinned inside one of the vehicles was freed by fire and rescue personnel and flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trama center in Baltimore with life-threatening injuries, the newspaper reported.

The Anne Arundel police closed the northbound lanes of Solomons Island Road at Mayo Road on Friday morning to investigate the accident.

They said that one southbound lane on Solomons Island Road remained open, but urged motorists in the area to use alternate routes.
