Here are the top four stories in Laurel today:

1. The end to the cicadas' presence is near, according to Mike Raupp, entomology professor at the University of Maryland. Cicada emergence hit its peak in late May, when the highest number of adolescent cicadas crawled out from their underground homes and attached themselves to trees and surfaces throughout the region. Many adult cicadas already are dying off but it will be a few weeks before they are completely gone. In the next few weeks, female cicadas will lay the last of their eggs and the newly hatched nymphs will return to the ground until 2038. (Baltimore Sun)

The commencement address was delivered by Emilie Hunt-Shipman, a Pallotti alumna from 1968, who retired this month after 49 years of teaching French at her alma mater. Shipman took students on Spring Break trips to France 23 times in her 49-year tenure. (Baltimore Sun)

3. According to Patch reporter Jacob Baumgart, Maryland’s first heat-related death of this year was reported in Prince George's County. The victim was a man in his 40s. (Patch)

4. According to Patch reporter Jordan D. Brown, leaders are celebrating the roles of dads and father figures in the lives of their friends and family with a round of golf and some grilling.
