Laurel Driver In Route 1 Crash In Critical Condition: Police

Police said three vehicles were involved in a serious crash Tuesday on Washington Boulevard in Howard County.

LAUREL, MD — A serious crash in Laurel sent two people to the hospital, police said, and one of them was in critical condition. The collision resulted in the temporary closure of Route 1 in the Laurel area on Tuesday, authorities reported.

The crash happened at 4:36 p.m. in the 9400 block of Washington Boulevard, according to police.

Officials said a 2006 Toyota Corolla was headed south on Route 1 when for an unknown reason the driver moved to the right side of the road, crossed into northbound lanes and hit a 2001 Honda Civic and 2006 GMC Yukon.

Route 1 near Laurel was temporarily shut down as emergency officials evaluated those involved.

Patricia Marie Johnston, 33, of Laurel, was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and was listed in critical condition, police said. She was identified as the driver of the Corolla.

The 34-year-old passenger in the Honda Civic was taken to the Prince George's Hospital Center, and police said her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. The driver of the Civic, a 35-year-old Columbia man, was not injured, officials reported, and neither was the driver of the Yukon, a 45-year-old Jessup man.

PREVIOUS REPORT — A crash on Route 1 near Laurel temporarily shut down the road Tuesday night, officials said. Three vehicles were involved in the collision, according to transportation officials.

The crash happened before 5 p.m. on US 1/Washington Boulevard at Lynn Buff Court, officials reported.

There were serious injuries as a result of the collision and major delays, according to the Howard County Police Department.

By 5:40 p.m., police reported one southbound lane had reopened but advised drivers to continue to avoid the area.
