Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:

1. Prince Georges County is endorsing the completion of dozens of new trail projects that will expand the Capital Trail Network. The Capital Trail Network connects Prince George’s and Montgomery counties in Maryland to D.C. and Northern Virginia with 479 miles of trails. The Capital Trails Coalition, which maintains and builds additional trails, hopes to complete 40 new projects by 2025. If this is completed, the Capital Trails Coalition estimates nearly 4 million people will live within a two-mile walk or ride of the network. (WTOP)

2. Maryland man accused of selling bus engine parts stolen from a Metro inventory warehouse where he worked has been indicted in Prince George’s County. David Wright, 34, of Laurel, is charged with one count of theft over $100,000 and one count of theft under $100,000. The bus fuel injectors, valves and sensors Wright is accused of selling online are worth an estimated $155,000, according to Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy. Wright no longer works for the transit agency. If convicted, Wright faces up to 20 years in prison. (WTOP)

3. Stand Up and Deliver Program provides free meals, produce and water to those in need in Prince Georges County. This program was made possible by Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks who said that she realizes that food insecurity is an issue that predated COVID-19 and the pandemic. The program began a year ago, when amid the pandemic, it became evident there was a need for extra help. Several organizations and businesses came together to make the program a reality. (WTOP)

  • Public Food Distribution – Serving our community by giving away fruits and vegetables, bread, meats, and dairy products that are donated for distribution to the needy. Boxes and bags filled with groceries to grab and go. Volunteers may call (240)583-0996 to get involved. (10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)
  • Free Acupuncture – Master’s level acupuncture students, under supervision by licensed and experienced faculty, will provide safe and effective auricular treatments. There is a limit of six participants per seating in order to ensure a safe, physically distanced, and peaceful experience. (1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.)
  • Kidz Pick – Experience a perfect mixture of excitement, creativity and fun-filled activities. Each day the schedule will include Krafty Kids, Amazing Artists, Spectacular Sports, Great Games, Science Superstarz, and Nifty Naturalist. Lunch will be provided to all campers.   • Derrick Lewis's Basketball Camp – Join U of MD's All-ACC Player and Coach Derrick Lewis as he brings his exciting basketball experiences to the courts!   • Gardens Ice House Summer Camp – Join this camp for affordable fun! Sports, games, contests, a mobile video game, arts and crafts, team building challenges, and special activities are offered. This camp’s proven curriculum and programming formula allows the instructors to roll through the day weaving high intensity and low impact activities together so that every type of kid has their moment to shine! (9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
