Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:
- Gov. Larry Hogan says Maryland will end extra $300 weekly payments and other federal unemployment programs. The changes will take effect in early July and affect all cities, including Laurel. Three other programs will also be discontinued including aid for the self-employed and gig workers. Claimants will be required to show that they are looking for a new job. The federal programs were extended until September under the American Rescue Plan Act, passed by Congress in March. On the week of July 4, the state also will reinstate its work-search requirement, which was suspended last March as the coronavirus pandemic hit. (Baltimore Sun)
- A squad of firefighters from Laurel Engine 49 rushed to the scene of a car fire on June 5. The fire was located on Route 1 and 175. Upon arrival, the engine saw flames engulfing a vehicle and quickly extinguished the fire. One person was injured. (Laurel Volunteer Rescue Squad Company 49)
- Last Saturday (June 5), a squad of firefighters from Laurel Engine 49 were alerted for the truck fire on the UPS lot in Laurel. Upon arrival, the firefighters saw a number of tractor trailers that were on fire. So they called for backup units from PGFD and Montgomery County. No injuries were reported.
