MD AIR has expanded the program in 2020 to include a new and 4th residency position that is sponsored by the Downtown Columbia Arts and Culture Commission (DCACC) and Soulful Symphony. The artist selected for this position will have studio space with the three artists, as well as, the opportunity for mentorship and collaboration with Darin Atwater, the Artist Director of DCACC and founder of Soulful Symphony.

The Studio space will be provided in the 6100 Merriweather, a new office building in Downtown Columbia’s Merriweather District. Residential accommodations will be provided within walking distance at Juniper, the district’s latest residential building.

The Howard Hughes Corporation owns, manages and develops commercial, residential and mixed-use real estate in 14 states, including Maryland, where it is developing Downtown Columbia. For more information, visit www.howardhughes.com/properties/downtown-columbia.

“The Howard Hughes Corporation has invited many artists to collaborate in the creation process of the Merriweather District”, said Regional President Greg Fitchitt. “Through our collaborative programs such as the Artist-in-Residence program and Books in Bloom, we worked together to transform a suburban downtown into a dense, vibrant urban core that helps celebrate culture and commerce.”

Downtown Columbia includes the iconic Merriweather Post Pavilion, which recently underwent a $50 million renovation and expansion. Additionally, in 2019, Soulful Symphony, in partnership with the Downtown Columbia Commission for the Arts, declared that Merriweather Post Pavilion will be the longstanding home for the diverse 50-piece orchestra, lead by Darin Atwater.

“Under the mission of DCACC, we strive to democratize the arts by providing accessible and available programming to the community at large,” said Darin Atwater. “Partnering with the MD AIR program provides us with that opportunity and the program is inspiring us as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Soulful Symphony. We are looking forward to seeing the talent that applies.”

The MD AIR program is in its third of what will be an annual program to provide an opportunity for artists to spend two months in the midst of this evolving urban center at the vanguard of walkable communities that both nurture and catalyze creativity, vibrancy and equity.

Artists are encouraged to focus on the relationship between art and technology in responding to the MD AIR Call for Entry.

MD AIR applications will remain open until Tuesday, January 28, 2020. For further information and to apply, visit www.hocoarts.submittable.com.
