Welcome to the Laurel Daily! Here you will find newsworthy events going on this week, including local bridge work that could affect your commute, celebrating the accomplishments of local Girl Scouts, a fancy Gala hosted in honor Juneteenth, and a chance to play Picture Bingo at a local frozen yogurt shop.

Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:

1. Effective June 21, 2021 thru September 5, 2021, Prince George's County Department of Public Works and Transportation will be working on rehabilitating and restoring the Culvert Bridge by Lafayette Avenue and Bowie Road. Bowie Road will be CLOSED between 14910 Bowie Road (Laurel Rescue Squad) and Marshall Avenue. Please take note and find alternate routes through this area for the next few months. 2. As a way to earn their Bronze Awards, the highest honor a junior Girl Scout can earn, the members of Girl Scout Troop 4507 worked together to provide supplies to the Canine Humane Network in Olney. The girls collected various items the shelter needed, including towels, detergent, cleaning supplies, dog toys and collars/leashes from January 2020 through March 2020. They placed donation boxes in local schools. (Baltimore Sun)

3. Door-to-door canvassers in Prince George’s County, have completed the first phase of a countywide outreach effort, having knocked on more than 95,000 doors to provide information about COVID-19 vaccines and sign residents up for appointments. The outreach effort will now launch its next phase, aiming to knock on nearly three times as many doors to reach areas that are lagging in vaccination rates. Currently, Laurel has a vaccination rate of 75%. (WTOP)

  • Caring and Sharing Support Group – Attend this support group for caregivers and survivors. They will meet inside Laurel Regional Hospital. (12:00 p.m.)
  • 3rd Annual Black Heritage Gala, A New Era: Freeish – This Gala is a celebration of Juneteenth. Enjoy a night of music, dancing, fine dining and silent auctions. (7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.)
  • Picture Bingo at sweetFrog Laurel – Bring the kids in for some fun, prizes and sweetFrog! The kids will play three games of BINGO, two lines and one coverall. Games start promptly at 11:00 a.m. Tickets are $10 for each participant. This is not a drop off event. Parents don’t have to play, but they do have to stay! (11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)
  • Public Food Distribution – Serving our community by giving away fruits and vegetables, bread, meats, and dairy products that are donated for distribution to the needy. Boxes and bags filled with groceries to grab and go. Volunteers may call (240)583-0996 to get involved. (10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)
  • Making Strides Horse Show – Enjoy this outdoor event at Morningside Stables at Columbia Horse Center. (8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
  • Historic Laurel Walking Tour – Join the Laurel Historical Society for a walking tour through the historic district. Each day features a different route through town and are approximately one mile in length. Masks and social distancing are required to participate. (12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
  • Juneteenth Skate-Raiser: Fundraiser On Ice – Diversify Ice's Skate-Raiser is here! Come learn to skate, watch local skaters and Olympian, win prizes. Funds to support minority skaters. (1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.)
