Justice Trailblazers Featured at Black History Month Program
Residences at Vantage Point present panel discussion with new state's attorney, police chief and sheriff

Residences at Vantage Point in Downtown Columbia concluded its Black History Month celebration with “The 2019 Historic Face of Justice in Howard County,” a panel featuring Police Chief Lisa Myers, Sheriff Marcus Harris and State’s Attorney Richard Gibson. Moderated by Police Lt. Stephanie Wall, panel members discussed everything from their upbringing and professional background to issues of fairness and equity in dealing with offenders.
The trio are all trailblazers, the first African Americans to hold their positions in Howard County. Chief Myers is not only the first African American to serve as police chief, she is also the first woman to hold that position.
All cited “family” as being the most significant influence in their lives. Sheriff Harris said his late mother, a single parent, was his “best friend” who taught him independence. Chief Myers came from a “warm and inviting” family which welcomed others and taught the children that everyone deserved “equal respect.” Gibson’s father was from Barbados, and both he and Gibson’s mother stressed the value of education in raising their children.

All three cited “fairness” as the backbone of their dealings with their staffs and the public. Sheriff Harris said he chooses to lead by example. Chief Meyers sees herself as a role model and encourages others to advance in their careers, as she did. Gibson is interested in directing a more proactive operation than in the past, with special attention to young people.
