Laurel Receives Sustainable Community Award

From the City of Laurel: Mayor Craig A. Moe is pleased to announce that the City of Laurel has once again received a Sustainable Community designation from the State of Maryland!

The Sustainable Community designation is a place-based designation where public and private investments and partnerships receive development of a healthy, local economy; protection of historical and cultural resources; a mix of land uses; affordable and sustainable housing; and growth and development practices that protect the environment.

Mayor Moe commented that, “This is a great acknowledgement for the City of Laurel! It shows the commitment that I, and the Laurel City Council, continue to strive for to bring sustainable growth to the City of Laurel.”

Laurel originally received this designation as one of the first five cities in the State of Maryland in 2011. Renewed every 5 years, the City of Laurel received word that the designation was just renewed and will expire on October 26, 2021.

With this designation, comes the ability to continue to apply for grants through the Community Legacy Program that provides funding for projects aimed at strengthening communities through business retention, encouraging homeownership and commercial revitalization. The City of Laurel can also apply for funding through the Strategic Demolition Fund that encourages economic development, job production and smart growth.

The City looks forward to continued development of strategies with its Sustainable Team, which includes Central Maryland Regional Transit and the Laurel Board of Trade, among others. As the City works with these team members towards transit-oriented development, we will continue to prepare ourselves for the future growth in the I-95 corridor.
