LHS Announces 2021 James B. McCeney Scholarship

Applications are now open for the $1000 Laurel Historical Society’s James B. McCeney Scholarship. Named in honor of former long-time Laurel Historical Society Chairman, President, and Treasurer, the scholarship is designed to is to provide financial support ($1000) to a Laurel area high school student who wishes to pursue any degree that incorporates historical, political, and/or ecological issues that build better communities.

In awarding the scholarship the LHS looking for students who have developed skills that demonstrate an inquisitive nature and an interest in how the past impacts the present world and conditions in which we live in our community.

Application forms and a reference must be submitted by June 30th 2021. Applications can be found at: forms.gle/WYxAy3fAjpFaMBYK7.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee of the Laurel Historical Society including the Executive Director and members of the board of directors. Applications are only considered complete upon receipt of both the application and the reference. The McCeney Scholarship recipients will be notified by email no later than July 30th, 2021 and must confirm their acceptance by August 6th 2021. Following the recipients’ confirmations, all other applicants will be notified by email. For questions contact: info@laurelhistoricalsociety.org.

Funds for the James B McCeney Scholarship are raised annually through the Laurel Historical Society’s “McCeney March”, which is held in the Fall.

The Laurel Historical Society is located at 817 Main Street, Laurel, MD and operated the Laurel Museum. The Museum will reopen June 26 with an updated version of its exhibit “Unpacking Laurel’s Past; 150 Years On Display” which will feature new elements around the theme “2020: What a Year!” and look at Covid in Laurel, Social Justice, and the 150th Celebration that Wasn’t.
