Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:

1. Due to statewide COVID-19 case numbers declining, Maryland will end most of its Coronavirus emergency restrictions on July 1. Gov. Larry Hogan announced Tuesday the planned lifting of most statewide restrictions and orders related to the pandemic in just over two weeks. The state’s mask order — which requires face coverings indoors at schools, day care centers, medical settings and on mass transit — will expire the same day. A federal order requiring masks on planes, subways, buses and other mass transit remains in effect. (Baltimore Sun)

2. Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) stayed in a virtual learning format longer than other jurisdictions in the rest of Maryland. Now, it is offering summer classes to address “learning loss.” Dr. Kia McDaniel, director of curriculum and instruction for PGCPS, said the Summer Learning Spark sessions from July 6-30, provide a range of programs designed to offer enrichment, acceleration, credit recovery and more, depending on a student’s situation. 3. Gov. Larry Hogan has made Augustine’s bill a law. This bill establishes that minors aged 12 to 16 can consent to mental and emotional health care consultations and be diagnosed and treated without permission from their parents if a health care provider determines that they are mature and capable enough to give informed consent. This law, which will take effect on Oct. 1, will help young people who struggle with depression and have experienced isolation. (WTOP)
