Welcome to the Laurel Daily! Here you will find newsworthy events going on this week including local businesses awarded grants, Laurel Police Department K9 Bodhi’s new protective gear, and a notice from the mayor that will affect how you celebrate the 4th of July.

Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:

1. Mayor Craig A. Moe announced the following businesses have been awarded grants through the Main Street Strong COVID-19 Business Grant Program: Laurel Mill Playhouse, Frequency Salon, Laurel Historical Society, More than Java Café, Salon Etc., Entourage Hair Gallery, Streaks Hair Designs, Sankofa Yoga and Wellness, and Venus Theatre. The goal of this program is to provide financial support to businesses in the City of Laurel’s designated Main Street area that have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. 2. Laurel Police Department’s K9 Bodhi will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Bodhi’s vest is sponsored by Cyndi Brown of Fort Collins, Colorado. It will be embroidered with the sentiment “Born to love-Trained to Serve-Loyal Always”. This program is open to U.S. dogs that are at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. (City of Laurel)

3. Fireworks are illegal in the City of Laurel and Prince George’s County. Mayor Craig A. Moe says it’s important to remember that all consumer fireworks including sparklers and snappers are illegal. City of Laurel Fire Marshal Stephen Allen, Sr. says citizens and visitors who illegally sell, possess or use any type of fireworks in the city will have them confiscated and be fined up to $250. Locals are advised to leave the fireworks to the professionals. (City of Laurel)

  • Power Walking – This event is for people ages 13 and older. It will take place at Fairland Regional Park and registration is required via pgparksdirect.com. (8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.)
  • Public Food Distribution – Serving our community by giving away fruits and vegetables, bread, meats, and dairy products that are donated for distribution to the needy. Boxes and bags filled with groceries to grab and go. Volunteers may call (240)583-0996 to get involved. (10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)
  • Letterfly Pinstriping at Old Glory Harley-Davidson – Enjoy watching the hand-painted designs come to life as the artist (Letterfly) plies his special skills as pinstripe, pictorial, and lettering artist on motorcycles and helmets for an increasing list of satisfied customers. This event will take place outdoors and will obey appropriate safety precautions, distancing, masks, etc. No ticket or reservation needed. (9:00 a.m.)
  • Auricular Acupuncture at MUIH Main Campus – Master’s level acupuncture students, under supervision by licensed and experienced faculty, are providing safe and effective auricular treatments. Limit: Six participants per seating to ensure a safe, physically distanced, and peaceful experience. (12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.)
  • Kidz Pick – Experience a perfect mixture of excitement, creativity and fun-filled activities. Each day the schedule will include Krafty Kids, Amazing Artists, Spectacular Sports, Great Games, Science Superstarz, and Nifty Naturalist. Lunch will be provided to all campers.   • Derrick Lewis's Basketball Camp – Join U of MD's All-ACC Player and Coach Derrick Lewis as he brings his exciting basketball experiences to the courts!   • Rube Goldberg: Wacky Fun at Laurel Hybrid Summer Camp – At this Rube Goldberg Camp, kids can learn how to build a simple machine and learn about the connection to 19th Century Mill life.   • Gardens Ice House Summer Camp – Join this camp for affordable fun! Sports, games, contests, a mobile video game, arts and crafts, team building challenges, and special activities are offered. This camp’s proven curriculum and programming formula allows the instructors to roll through the day weaving high intensity and low impact activities together so that every type of kid has their moment to shine! (9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
