Observatory to Open in Howard County

The Howard Astronomical League will officially dedicate its new observatory this weekend in Marriottsville, and this public is invited to a ribbon-cutting and star-gazing party.

The observatory—which the league is calling HALO (Howard Astronomical League Observatory)—houses two telescopes and a library under a 15-foot-diameter dome.

A $10,000 state bond and private donations paid for construction of the observatory, which began in February, according to a statement from Howard County government.

As far as providing programs at the HALO, Howard County Recreation & Parks and the Howard Astronomical League will partner, the statement said.

To celebrate the dedication of the facility, the public is invited to a reception on Saturday, July 25, at the HALO, which is on the grounds of Alpha Ridge Park, 11685 Old Frederick Road, Marriottsville.

Family-oriented activities will begin at 7 p.m.

A ribbon-cutting will take place at 7:30 p.m. with attendees including Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman, Howard County Recreation & Parks personnel and Howard Astronomical League members.

There will be a “star party” for star gazing. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
