Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:
According to Patch reporter Jacob Baumgart, police arrested a Hyattsville driver, 19-year-old Kerod Rashard Ballinger, in Laurel last week. Police stopped Ballinger’s gray Ford Mustang near Whiskey Bottom Road at Maryland Route 198. After searching his car, police found that Ballinger had a semi-automatic handgun with a 30-round magazine and 11 bullets. This discovery led to his arrest. (Patch)

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) will offer free COVID-19 vaccines to students ages 12 and older, and their families, for one more day (June 15) through clinics in select high schools. Vaccines will be administered from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on school grounds. Eligible students must have the consent of a parent or guardian, and will need to present completed consent forms to be vaccinated. (WTOP)
Four stations on Metro’s Green and Yellow lines are closed until early September for platform reconstruction, as part of WMATA’s Metro Platform Improvement Program summer reconstruction phase. The stations – College Park-University of Maryland, Greenbelt, Prince George’s Plaza and West Hyattsville – are scheduled to reopen Sept. 6. Parking at the four stations will also be free while they remain closed for maintenance. (WTOP)

- Public Food Distribution – Fruits and vegetables, bread, meats, and dairy products are donated for distribution to the needy. Boxes and bags filled with groceries to grab and go. Volunteers may call (240) 583-0996 to get involved. (10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)
- Power Walking – This event is for people ages 13 and older. It will take place at Fairland Regional Park and registration is required via pgparksdirect.com. (8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.)
- Free Acupuncture – Master’s level acupuncture students, under supervision by licensed and experienced faculty, will provide safe and effective auricular treatments. There is a limit of six participants per seating in order to ensure a safe, physically distanced, and peaceful experience. (1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.)
