Here are the top two stories in Laurel today:

1. Maryland officials have scaled back their plan to widen the congested Capital Beltway around the District of Columbia, along with its connection to Interstate 270. The original plan, pushed by Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan since 2017, was supported by the region’s business leaders. Transportation officials said it would reduce annual drive time for the typical highway commuter by 73 hours, and it wouldn’t cost taxpayers because toll revenues would finance the project. But many local officials and community leaders spoke against widening the highways. They argued that the project would increase emissions of climate-altering greenhouse gases without easing the traffic congestion it was proposed to relieve. (Bay Journal)

2. The historical society’s popular summer camps will return this year in a hybrid format. All three of the camps are free. The Rube Goldberg Camp is open to rising third to fifth graders during the week of June 21 to 25 from 10:00 a.m. to noon daily. Students will learn how to build a simple machine and their connections to 19th-century mill life. Monday’s programming will be online, while programming Tuesday through Friday will be on-site at the Laurel Museum on Main Street. Registration is open.
