Wacky fun plus Science and Simple Machines are the focus of two free virtual summer camps offered by the Laurel Historical Society (LHS). Science in the Summer (SIS), for rising 2-6 graders runs August 10-14. The virtual SIS program focuses on chemistry, and will feature virtual instruction, videos, and experiments at home. The Rube Goldberg Virtual Camp offers creative youngers the chance to take everyday household items and figure out how to make a wacky contraption that illustrates how machines used in Laurel’s cotton mills worked. To register for the camps email info@laurelhistoricalsociety.org. Spaces are limited, but the places available are greater than in previous years because they are virtual programs. The LHS is also offering a Virtual Archaeology Camp, which starts August 3. The Laurel Historical Society is located at 817 Main Street. The Laurel Museum is currently closed, but visitors to the LHS website can virtually tour the current exhibit “Unpacking Laurel’s Past”, and research the organization’s collections online at www.laurelhistoricalsociety.org. Science in the Summer is a project of AAAS. The Archaeology and Rube Goldberg camps are made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in these programs do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Arts. ##
