Traveling 290 Miles by Scooter for Muscular Dystrophy
Doug and his dog Gracie are raising awareness to FSHD by traveling through six states on his mobility scooter.
On September 6, Doug Craig, a retired scientist with an incurable type of muscular dystrophy known as FSHD, began his journey form New York City to Washington, D.C. on his mobility scooter-accompanied by his Bernese mountain dog Gracie- to raise funds and awareness to FSHD and the FSH Society.
More than 870,000 people worldwide suffer from facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD), one of the most common and incurable types of muscular dystrophy. The genetic disorder presents a lifelong progressive loss of skeletal muscles, typically attacking the muscles of the face (facio), shoulder blades (scapula) and arms (humerus), though it can progress to affect any skeletal muscle. Approximately one-quarter to one-third of patients end up in wheelchairs.
Doug and Gracie will be making their way though Perryville on September 13. Perryville is the ninth stop on his 290-mile journey from New York City to the steps of the US Capitol in Washington, D.C.
