LGBTQ+ Pride Month 2021 Schedule Announced In Montgomery County

Councilmember Evan Glass is the council's first gay member and is spearheading the third annual Montgomery County Pride Month.

SILVER SPRING, MD — Montgomery County will kick off its third annual Pride Month on June 7 with the raising of a progress flag, a variant of the pride flag that has stripes to honor trans people and people of color.

"There are a wide range of identities within the LGBTQ+ community, and as we have witnessed racial violence across the country, it’s more important than ever to create positive change for all of us, not some of us," said councilmember Evan Glass, who is planning the events, in a release. "The LGBTQ+ rights movement has made tremendous strides over the past few decades, but there remains much more work to do. I believe that by bringing us all together, we can continue marching toward progress and healing."

Other pride events include Puppy Pride at Bark Social, a dog park with a bar; a Juneteenth celebration and Black Girl Magic stories; a Takoma Park "Show Your Pride" weekend; a Pride Drag Brunch at Bark Social; a youth writers showcase and a talk with Chasten Buttigieg about his book "I Have Something To Tell You."

Glass was elected to the council in 2018 and spearheaded the effort to bring Pride Month to Montgomery County, which is celebrated in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The first Montgomery Pride Month took place in 2019, the 50 year anniversary of the uprising.

"As the county's first LGBTQ Councilmember, it is an honor for me to lead events that are inclusive and representative of our diverse community," said Glass at the time of the first Pride Month in the county. "Members of the community, friends and allies have all been waiting years to see Pride events hosted right here in Montgomery County. Being part of the LGBTQ family is no longer reserved for gay folks who live in D.C.; we have a vibrant LGBTQ community here at home."
