Montgomery Blair HS Quiz Bowl Team to Compete Nationally
The quiz bowl team will represent their school at the Championship Tournament on May 26.

From NAQT: With its strong finish at the Centennial Invitational, the quiz bowl team from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring proved themselves worthy to play on a national stage. On May 26, 2017, the team will represent their school in a national competition testing their knowledge of history, science, literature, fine arts, geography, the social sciences, current events, and more areas of study: National Academic Quiz Tournaments' High School National Championship Tournament.Quiz bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for teams of four students.
Quiz bowl teams use buzzers to answer questions about science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports, and popular culture. The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration, since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas. Participation in quiz bowl both reinforces lessons from the classroom and encourages players to develop new intellectual interests.Montgomery Blair has attended the High School National Championship Tournament four times before. Most recently, in 2016, they made the playoffs and finished in 34th place.Last year's tournament featured 272 of the top high school teams from across the United States, with Hunter College High School of New York City defeating Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology of Alexandria, Virginia in overtime in the finals by a score of 400-355.
This year's competition will again feature 272 teams. Montgomery Blair may face familiar foes in Atlanta, as Quince Orchard (from Gaithersburg), Richard Montgomery (from Rockville), and Winston Churchill (from Potomac) will also be attending.Montgomery Blair High School will send two teams to the 2017 HSNCT. The A team will consist of Anson Berns, Sambuddha Chattopadhyay, Ben Miller, and Ian Rackow. The B team will consist of Haydn Gwyn, Katherine Lei, Sophia Weng, and David Witten. The teams will be coached by Erik Lodal and James Schafer, who will be assisted by Peter Hammond.Tournament results will be updated throughout the three days of competition at http://www.naqt.com/stats/tournament-teams.jsp?tournament_id=7400 so everyone can follow along and see how the team does.
