Red Line Riders To See Major Delays, Metro Says

Construction work at the Silver Spring Station will impact Red Line riders next week, Metro says.

SILVER SPRING, MD — If you need to take Metro next week, you'd better schedule some extra time for your commute.

Metro will be undertaking two major projects that will significantly disrupt the lives of riders, especially those who frequent the Takoma and Silver Spring stations.

A huge 45-day Red Line maintenance project begins Saturday and will last until Sept. 3, and it will involve the complete shutdown of the Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood and Brookland stations in D.C., with shuttle buses replacing those trains.

The work zone will be extended to Silver Spring Station, which will close the Takoma Station and the Red Line platform at Fort Totten, on the weekend of July 28-29.

Most Red Line customers can avoid the work zone by using the Green Line between Fort Totten and Gallery Place stations, Metro said.

Riders can take a free express shuttle bus serving Takoma and Silver Spring.

Free express shuttle buses will also operate between Brookland and Rhode Island Ave and the areas of Metro Center, Gallery Place and Union Station.

Metro will also run some Yellow Line trains to/from Greenbelt during rush hours to provide additional capacity.
