Silver Spring Ice Skating is Open for the Season!

Open every day for outdoor ice skating until March 25, plus Boogie Nights on Thursdays

Silver Spring Ice Skating opened for the season in mid-October, the first outdoor rink to open in the DC region this year. Throughout the season the rink offers public ice skating, skate rentals, parties, lessons, and more, open every day and on all holidays at the Veteran’s Plaza Ice Skating Pavilion, 8523 Fenton Street at the Silver Spring Civic Building. Get more information from the skating hotline, 301-588-1221, and visit www.SilverSpringIceSkating.com. Get down every Thursday! Silver Spring Ice Skating hosts Boogie Nights from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m., playing Funk music for skaters of all ages.

“We’re proud to say that Silver Spring is always the first outdoor rink to open in the DC region,” says rink manager, Lance Curran. While the sun shone and warm temperatures prevailed during opening week, he explains, a special paint was applied to the ice surface enabling the chillers under the ice surface to do their work. “The painted ice looks nice, but it’s also important for reflecting the sun’s energy on our outdoor rink.” Also thanks to the chiller technology, the rink is open for skating when outdoor temperatures are warm, and the well-designed roof protects it from precipitation. The swooping roof also shines with hundreds of multi-colored lights in the evening hours. At 106 feet by 57 feet, the rink is an ideal size for all levels of skaters. For toddlers, double bladed skates are available, and to keep new skaters steady on the ice, penguin-shaped skating aids are provided on request. For those who have never tried skating or want to improve their skills, a variety of skating lessons for all levels are available. Silver Spring Ice Skating also has an ongoing schedule of group instruction sessions with no pre-registration required.
