Speed Cameras Cited 280K, Raked In Over $10M In FY2019
Still, citations and revenue saw a major decrease from the year before.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Montgomery County's 77 speed cameras have been instrumental in issuing over 280,000 citations to speeders on the county's roadways in fiscal year 2019, resulting in over $10 million in gross revenue, according to Montgomery Community Media.
Rich Hetherington, manager of the county's automated enforcement, told MCM the busier commuter routes are the roadways generally resulting in the most citations.
"First and foremost, they work. They're effective in reducing crashes," and in improving safety and reducing speed Hetherington said. MCM reported that even such high numbers are a decrease from the year before. Fiscal year 2018 saw over 400,000 violations from speed cameras, raking in about $15 million in revenue.

They spread the 77 cameras across 350 sites, Hetherington said in the video, oftentimes rotating them from place to place in order to maximize their effect.
Hetherington said officials analyze data from the cameras, like how long it takes for them to take effect on drivers' behaviors, to see what the best method is for moving them from site to site.
