Toxic chemicals on Leisure World golf course

Those of good conscience can only choose to support an amendment to the law banning pesticides on all golf courses in Montgomery County.

Toxic chemicals on Leisure World golf course

The Montgomery County, Maryland Council refuses to comply with requests to amend the law banning the use of pesticides on private and public golf courses, thus continuing endangerment of humans, animals and our environmental health.

This is of particular interest to the 8500+ senior residents of the Leisure World of Maryland community.

Asking his support and introduction for an amendment to the County pesticide law, a contingency of Leisure World resident advocates, accompanied by world recognized pesticide expert, Dr. Diana Post, Founder/President of the Rachel Carson Alliance, held a meeting with Council member Evan Glass earlier this year. After the meeting Glass wrote: "With regards to future council action, there does not appear to be support from a majority of the council members to expand the scope of the pesticides law."

As previously stated in my 2/12/15 Montgomery County Council pesticide ban hearing testimony:

"In stripping away the political nature of this discussion, those of good conscience can only choose to support an amendment to the law banning pesticides on all public and private golf courses in Montgomery County, Md."

"This is not a game - this is the risk of sickness vs. health, life vs. death.

There are 2 kinds of people involved in the pesticide issue:

1. those who care about the health, safety and welfare of people, animals and the environment -
2. those who do not."

Thee Leisure World Community Corporation and its golf advisory committee, have ignored requests asking them to voluntarily transition to naturally derived/organic turf care, have been ignored.

The Leisure World of Maryland golf course takes up 85 of the 610 acres in the 8500+ senior resident independent living community. There are 110 or less residents who pay $800 annual membership dues, approximately 45 or less non-residents pay $900 annual golf membership dues.

Historically deficient to the tune of approximately $350,000 annually, including the purchase of, equipment and manpower to apply toxic chemicals, each of the 6500+ unit owners are required to subsidize the vastly the deficit for the underused "money pit"golf operation.

The (2014) Montgomery County Dept. of Environmental Protection Watershed Management Division report reflects the fouling of Leisure World golf course steam beds leading to the Bel Pre Creek/Northwest Tributaries, flowing into the Chesapeake Bay.

This is the list of toxic chemicals the elected Council members allow to be applied to the Leisure World of Maryland 18-hole golf course:
