To keep the public safe, Montgomery County has published a list of tips on its website. Take a look at the list below:

  • Neighbors, friends or family members should check on the elderly, especially a senior living alone. Older people are particularly susceptible to hypothermia, even inside their homes and may need assistance.
  • Children engaged in outdoor activities should be carefully monitored by a responsible adult.
  • Everyone spending time outside should dress appropriately to protect against the cold.
  • Montgomery County provides a variety of sheltering opportunities for the homeless. Call the police non-emergency line, 301-279-8000 if an individual appears to be in danger.
  • Animals should not be left outside unattended. Leaving animals outside unattended in these conditions may be considered an act of cruelty and pet owners could be charged and fined accordingly. Executive Regulation 10-10AM, unattended tethering of dogs goes into effect during periods of extreme cold. Call the police non-emergency number, 301-279-8000, to report an animal that appears to be in danger.

In addition to these safety tips, Montgomery County is reminding community members of the following information. This information is also available on the county's website.

County facilities, such as libraries, recreation centers, and senior centers are open during their regular hours for anyone who needs an escape from the cold. Public shopping centers are also open during their regular hours. Outreach program providers urge homeless individuals to seek shelter.
