Andover Fire Asks For Help Clearing Fire Hydrants After Snowfall

Firefighters lose time they could use fighting a fire when they have to find and dig out a hydrant.

ANDOVER, MA — Andover Fire Rescue asked for public help in clearing fire hydrants in a press release Wednesday. After nearly a foot of snow in a couple of days, hydrants around town are among the more important things to uncover. In an emergency, precious time can be lost finding and uncovering a hydrant, according to Fire Chief Michael Mansfield.

The department is actively clearing snow Wednesday, they said, but they need public help. They want residents to clear snow within 3 feet of hydrants.

“We’re encouraging residents to help us clear away the snow from the fire hydrants near their homes and businesses to ensure firefighters can access them easily and swiftly in the event of a fire,” Mansfield said. “It only takes a few minutes to clear the snow away from a hydrant, but in an emergency, those minutes are precious.”
