Andover May Drop Speed Limits On Some Roads To 25 MPH

A change in state law last year gave towns more control to set speed limits.

ANDOVER, MA -- Andover Police asked the Board of Selectmen last week to consider a proposal to lower the speed limit to 25 miles per hour from 30 miles per hour on certain roads in town. Police Chief Patrick Keefe said if approved, the changes would apply to "non-posted, thickly settled areas" and police would make recommendation on where to drop the speed limit on a neighborhood-by-neighborhood basis.

A 2017 change in state law gave towns more local control on setting speed limits. More than 30 Massachusetts towns have already made changes to their speed limits. Selectmen took no action after hearing the police department's presentation and will continue to consider the proposal.
