Hookah Lounge Does Not Meet Zoning Criteria

The Lux Hookah Lounge’s application to open an establishment in Andover has been denied by the building inspector.

Chris Clemente told the Eagle-Tribune last week that the lounge does not meet the current zoning of the building — 63 Park St.

The Park Street building is zoned “general business.” Domino’s Pizza, Wardrobe, Andover Spine Center and offices are all located in the building. Clemente told the newspaper “the zoning ‘basically says unless it is specifically allowed, it is prohibited.’”

The owners of Lux can appeal the decision to the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals.

What is a hookah?

Hookahs are “water pipes that are used to smoke specially made tobacco that comes in different flavors, such as apple, mint, cherry, chocolate, coconut, licorice, cappuccino, and watermelon,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC claims that hookah smoking has the same health risks as cigarette smoking.

The Lux Hookah Lounge already has one operating business in Plymouth, where groups are invited to “sit down with friends and relax with one of our premium blends.”

Hookahs vary in shape and size, but are used in groups, as one mouthpiece is passed from user to user.
