New exhibitions will open at the Addison Gallery on January 16
Two new shows invite visitors to explore themes of loss, mending, and healing
Opening on Saturday, January 16 at the Addison Gallery of American Art, on the campus of Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, two new exhibitions invite visitors to explore themes of loss, mending, and healing:
Yoko Ono: Mend Piece
In this immersive exhibition space, Yoko Ono has proposed communal mending as an act of healing. Presented with shattered cups and saucers, participants are asked to bind the fragments together using common household items: twine, glue, scissors, and tape. The resulting creations are displayed on nearby shelves, evidence of the power of collective action.
Aphrodite Désirée Navab: Landmines of Memory
Created while Navab was an Addison Edward E. Elson Artist-in-Residence, this series of ink drawings is inspired by her brother, Alexander Navab (PA 1983), who passed away unexpectedly in 2019. Mining her Iranian, Greek, and American heritage, Navab combines in this series the Labyrinth from Greek mythology and the patience stone from Persian folklore to explore stories of exile and migration, rupture and suture, loss and survival.
