State Police Investigating Crash That Snarled I-495 In Andover

One driver in the three-car crash Monday morning was airlifted to a Boston hospital.

ANDOVER, MA -- State Police said Monday afternoon they are investigating a three-car crash in Andover that left massive backups on Interstate 495 into Monday afternoon. A 68-year-old man from Ashland was driving a 2012 Hino box truck just south of the Interstate 93 interchange when his vehicle drifted into the right lane and struck a 2005 GMC Topkick truck operated by a 70-year-old Fitchburg man. The Hino then swerved to the left and struck a 2011 Toyota Camry operated by an 83-year-old Sturbridge woman, who was traveling northbound in the left travel lane.

After the second collision, State Police said, the Hino crossed back over the travel lanes before rolling over off the right side of the roadway. The driver of the Hino, who was unbelted at the time of the crash, was ejected during the rollover and was pinned underneath his truck.

The Andover Fire Department was able to free the man, who was taken by helicopter to Boston Medical Center in Boston with serious injuries. State Police said the crash, which led to a four-hour backup on the highway, remains under investigation. No charges had been filed as of Monday afternoon.
