UBERDOC Enters Scene as New Face of Old-Fashioned Medicine
Dr. Paula Muto discusses the patient-to-specialist web app's business model and how it diverges from traditional scheduling methods.

Patient-to-specialist web app UBERDOC prides itself as an instant connection between patients in need of urgent medical care and board-certified surgeons. Direct access to accelerated appointment dates allow for virtually no wait time, offering simple, safe and reliable options.
Patch: Tell us about the UBERDOC business model. How does it work?
UBERDOC: UBERDOC is the patient-to-specialist (P2S) direct access web app. The UBERDOC web app instantly connects patients needing urgent medical care directly to a choice of specialists without requiring a referral, insurance paperwork or having to wait months for an appointment. The bureaucracy of today's overburdened healthcare system makes it impossible for a patient requiring urgent medical care to immediately get an appointment with the best specialists for their needs. Patients in need of urgent medical care are immediately granted direct access to a choice of the best specialists and instantly offered an accelerated appointment date with virtually no wait time. Patients pay a flat fee — every time — with their HSA or credit card, no insurance or referrals involved.

Patch: How does UBERDOC distinguish itself from traditional appointment scheduling?
UBERDOC: Patients normally have to go to their primary care provider prior to seeing a specialist, even when they have a good idea of what is wrong, and they often receive expensive and often unnecessary tests. Specialists can both diagnose and treat. Patients don’t need to wait for an office to answer or a call back. UBERDOC sends an email to the patient confirming time and place. It’s a walk in model for specialty care. For first visit only, all subsequent care can be through insurance.

Patch: What are the benefits of using UBERDOC versus traditional appointment scheduling?
UBERDOC: No phone calls; accelerated appointment date; no need to get a referral; patient isin charge, not the network or insurance; patients pay a simple fee up front.
Patch: Tell us about the UBERDOC beginnings and the inspiration behind its inception.
UBERDOC: I am a surgeon from a family of surgeons and see first-hand how difficult the system is for both patients and doctors. It doesn’t have to be this complicated.
My father, Dr. Rudolph Muto, used to say, “Just take good care of the patient.”
UBERDOC allows patients and doctors to connect without anything in the way. The purpose is to give patients a choice, an alternative to the current system.
Patch: What is the UBERDOC experience?
UBERDOC: Patients can find a specialist nearby and request an appointment in a few steps without worrying about insurance requirements or restrictions. Once they are seen, they can use their insurance for all subsequent care. Medicare patients can pay for the appointment hold and the specialist can bill Medicare for the rest.
Patch: What areas of specialty does UBERDOC offer?
UBERDOC: General surgery, vascular surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, urology, ENT, thoracic, spine, pediatric surgery, hand, fertility and pain management
Patch: How can a doctor become enrolled in UBERDOC?
UBERDOC: Our UBERDOCs are board-certified/eligible surgeons, credentialed at at least one hospital and in active practice. Offices can enroll their practices on our website.
Patch: UBERDOC prides itself as an offer of value for both patient and doctor. How does it accomplish this?
UBERDOC: For the patient, they are seeing a surgeon, who can solve the problem without delay or insurance restriction for a transparent price.
For the doctor, they have access to a new patient and are being paid cash, and while it is less money than insurance, it is enough to keep an office solvent and independent.
Patch: What is the outlook for the future of UBERDOC? What’s next?
UBERDOC: We are actively recruiting physicians onto the platform, and we want patients to try it out. We think it’s a great idea, and at a time when there is so much uncertainty, there is a simple and safe option for people to rely on.
