Beverly Drawbridge Project Nearing Completion
The drawbridge work, which shut down all Newburyport/Rockport MBTA service, is expected to be complete on schedule.

BEVERLY, MA – Your weekday train service on the MBTA Commuter Rail's Newburyport/Rockport line is coming back: Work on the Beverly drawbridge is nearing completion, and service is expected to return on Aug. 14. Weekend service will still be shut down while federally mandated work is completed.
Interim General Manager Steve Poftak visited several job sites last weekend, including the Beverly drawbridge. To accommodate work around the state, five separate bus shuttles have replaced rail service for various reasons, including the replacement of the 120-year old railroad drawbridge in Beverly, the installation of federally mandated Positive Train Control (PTC) infrastructure along the Newburyport/Rockport and Lowell Commuter Rail Lines, core infrastructure capital project work on the Orange Line, and work being performed as part of MassDOT’s Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Project.
Weekend service should be restored by October, after a safety system that prevents train-on-train collisions, speeding derailments, and human error, is installed.
