Beverly's November Construction Update

Here are the next phases of the Route 1A project: Look to avoid Rantoul Street where possible.

BEVERLY, MA – It continues! The upcoming projects this month involve some work at the new Beverly Middle School on Cabot Street to Herrick Street, detours at the south end of Rantoul Street, and tree planting. Here is the city's update on the Route 1A project, with planned traffic detours highlighted:

  • Phase 1 (The new Middle School on Cabot Street to Herrick Street): Signs were installed the week of October 31. Exposed tree wells will be secured for the winter months to prevent tripping hazards. Light pole pedestals will be clearly marked and covered until the light poles are delivered and installed.
  • Phase 2 (Cabot Street: Herrick Street to Gloucester Crossing): Finishing up the last conduit work in the exposed sidewalk areas and pouring concrete sidewalks in the next couple of weeks. Exposed tree wells will be secured for the winter months to prevent tripping hazards. Light pole pedestals will be clearly marked and covered until the light poles are delivered and installed.
  • Phase 3 (Rantoul Street: Southernmost part of Rantoul Street to Pleasant Street): Over the next few weeks the final curbs, sidewalks, light pole mounts will be built and completed. Detouring at the southernmost portion of Rantoul Street will be necessary at times. After the sidewalks are poured, tree wells will be secured for the winter months to prevent tripping hazards. Light pole pedestals will be clearly marked and covered until the light poles are delivered and installed. Road striping will happen at the end of November.
  • Phase 4A (Rantoul Street: Pleasant Street to Wallis Street): Same as Phase 3, but from Pleasant Street to Wallis Street. Detouring at the southernmost portion of Rantoul Street will be necessary at times.
  • Phase 4 (Elliott Street: From Cabot Street to Rantoul Street): The roadway asphalt base layer and binder layer were completed on Nov. 1. The reconstruction of the curbs and sidewalks will not take place this construction season and will be done in the spring. Asphalt will be put down in front of driveways to minimize drops/bumps transitioning to the road. The existing sidewalks will also be worked on to ensure they are safe for pedestrian travel over the winter. Road striping will happen at the end of November.
  • The Phase 4 road reconstruction on Rantoul Street (from Elliott Street to Gloucester Crossing) will be postponed until 2017. However, during the month of November subsurface utility work will be performed, which at times could cause some traffic impacts.
  • Phase 5 (Wallis Street to Federal Street): Full depth reconstruction will be postponed until 2017. However, over the winter subsurface utility work will be performed, which at times could cause some traffic impacts.
  • Comcast: Comcast is completing their work on Rantoul Street and should be fully completed for the entire project in the next week (weather and field conditions permitting).
  • Tree Planting: Tree plantings will likely occur in two phases. The areas ready for plantings in the spring will be planted and then at the conclusion of the road work in the fall the remaining sections will be planted.
