Montserrat Offering Online BFA Classes this Summer

BEVERLY - Montserrat is delighted to offer students the opportunity to take online BFA courses for credit this summer! Registration is open to students everywhere, and of any college, who are interested in earning credits over their summer break. Montserrat administration has intentionally kept the tuition rate low in order to further help meet the needs of students during this challenging time.

Summer online studio + liberal arts course registration is open and students can register online! Current Montserrat students can register through CafeWeb, and outside students can email registrar@montserrat.edu. Online courses are offered during both summer sessions (Summer I: May 18 – June 26 and Summer II: July 6 – August 14) and can be found under those respective terms in Café. Class space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Courses Include:

Summer Session I: May 18 – June 26

An Introduction to Social Art Practice: Open Art Schools (3 credits) K. Farrington

This seminar introduces students to Social Art Practice, defined as “community-driven artistic projects operating in the public sphere, whose motivating is often to create lasting social, political, or environmental change.”

Writing Poetry (3 credits) C. Boyer

For students who’ve already taken Intro to Creative Writing and wish to pursue poetry. Students will write their own work and critique the work of their classmates in workshops.

Science and Technology in Contemporary Art (3 credits) J. Buntaine Hoel

Artist’s today are painting with bacteria, creating 3D-printed sculptures from their own medical data, crocheting coral reefs, and more. This course will explore how contemporary artists in a variety of media are engaging with the fields of science and technology in a movement known as SciArt.

Forensic Science (3 credits) M. Cross

This course will introduce students to modern criminal investigative techniques through hands-on activities. Students will learn how to observe, collect, and evaluate evidence found at crime scenes. Topics include serology, DNA analysis, fingerprint analysis, and more.

Summer Session II: July 6 – August 14

A Lost and Found Workshop (3 credits) C. Sams and L. Thomas-Vickory

This course will focus on adaptations in process, materials, and mindsets. Working with new found 2D and 3D materials and processes, students will make independent work based on thematic challenges. Special attention will be paid to methods of sharing/exhibiting work during restrictive situations.

Creative Identity and Consciousness (3 credits) M. Grant

This class will explore identity through a psychological and sociological lens. Topics will cover our different related identities—personal, role, social, and collective. Assignments will consist of daily mindfulness track and journaling, responses to online content, and a final project.
