Former Beverly High School boys’ hockey coach Bob Gilligan confirmed Straw's death to Wicked Local Beverly, which first reported this story. Other details were not immediately available.
Straw went to the University of Montana after graduating from Beverly High School, but he did not play collegiate hockey.

"I'm saddened that hockey is over for me, but ending it with a ring on my finger really eases the pain," Straw told the Salem News after the championship season. "Winning this title proves everyone wrong who doubted us and said we wouldn't...My absolute favorite memory forever will be winning this state title with the kids I grew up with since Mites and the coaches I grew up watching play."
