Obituary: Honorable Michael Charles Lauranzano, 61

During his 16 years on the bench, Lauranzano helped found the Lynn Drug Court and served as the First Justice of the Lynn District Court.

Honorable Michael Charles Lauranzano, of Beverly, MA, died Friday (November 20, 2015) at the home he shared with his wife of 36 years, Kristine Murray Lauranzano. He was 61.

Judge Lauranzano was born on January 7, 1954 in Columbia, South Carolina. A Beverly High School graduate, he earned a B.S. from Suffolk University in 1976 and a J.D. from the New England School of Law in 1981. He began his career as an aide to then Senate President Kevin Harrington in 1976. After his admittance to the bar in 1981, he served as an assistant district attorney for the Essex District Attorney’s Office until he joined Alexander, Femino, and Lauranzano Law Firm in 1987. He also served as assistant city solicitor, from 1988 to 1992, and city solicitor, from 1992 to 1993, for the City of Beverly. In 1999, he was appointed associate justice of the Salem District Court by the late Governor Argeo Paul Cellucci. During his 16 years on the bench, Judge Lauranzano helped found the Lynn Drug Court, served as the First Justice of the Lynn District Court, and served on numerous judicial advisory and educational boards. Throughout his life, he displayed a genius for cultivating an ever-widening circle of cherished friends. He was involved in local politics and numerous youth athletic leagues and served on the Beverly Elementary Schools Building Commission. Judge Lauranzano was an avid fan of New England sports teams, a voracious reader of fiction and history, and, above all, a man dedicated to his community and his family.

In addition to his wife Kris, he is survived by his two sons Peter Michael Lauranzano and Matthew Barry Lauranzano, and his daughter-in-law Kelly (Novack) Lauranzano; his father Guido Lauranzano and his companion Barbara Campbell of Beverly; his sister Robin (Lauranzano) Gillette and her husband Raymond Gillette; two brothers, Christopher Lauranzano and his wife Katherine (Mahoney) Lauranzano, and Marc Lauranzano and his husband Keith Silva, of Lynn; brother-in-law Neil Murray and his wife Georgie Collins of Cambridge; brother-in-law Mark Murray and his wife Karen (Kristoff) Murray of Winchester; sister-in-law Julie (Murray) Frerk and her husband John Frerk of Beverly; brother-in-law Steven Murray and wife Patrice (Cavanaugh) Murray of Ipswich; and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is predeceased by a sister-in-law, Gail (Maisprellis) Murray of Beverly; and his mother, Alice (Palmquist) Lauranzano of Beverly.
