Salem YMCA To Run Early Learning Center At Salem High School

The center will be able to serve up to 26 children.

SALEM, MA – Salem Public Schools are partnering with the Salem YMCA to ensure that its Early Learning Center located at Salem High School will be open for teen parents, district employees and others who need high-quality affordable care for the 2017-2018
school year.

Children’s Friends and Family Services notified Salem Superintendent Margarita Ruiz that it would cease to operate the Salem High Early Learning Center as of June 30 . The loss of the
program represented a loss of daycare for students and staff as well as the opportunity to provide students enrolled in the high school’s Early Childhood and Care Vocational program hands on
experience.

"We are grateful that the Salem YMCA will operate an early learning center at Salem High," said Ruiz. "The YMCA is a recognized leader in early childhood development. The opportunity to provide licensed care at Salem High and internships for students who are pursuing certificates in Early Childhood and Care is important to the District."

The Salem Y has committed to run the center starting on Aug. 22, through the school year. The center, which can serve up to 26 children, will operate from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the school year. The center will serve children age six weeks up to 5 years of age. Space will be reserved for Salem Public Schools students who may need childcare for their children.

In its first year as provider, the Salem Y will honor the current model of supporting families by allowing them to place their care on hold during school vacation and summers.
