Vermont Man Arraigned in Connection With Fatal Beverly Crash

The crash killed a 19-year-old Endicott College student over the weekend.

Beverly, MA - A 20-year old Vermont man was arraigned today in Salem District Court on charges in connection with a fatal motor vehicle crash on Hale Street in Beverly, early Saturday morning, which took the life of Craig Sampson, 19, Williston, VT. Sampson was a student at Endicott College.

Joseph Castano also of Williston, VT, was charged with Motor Vehicle Homicide by Operating Under the Influence (Liquor) and Negligent Operation Causing Death; Minor in Possession of Alcohol; Marked Lanes Violation; and Speeding. Judge Robert Brennan released him on $25,000 cash bail and ordered him not to drive, to remain alcohol free, and to have no contact with the victim’s family. A sobrietor, a device which allows the Probation Department to perform random alcohol screens, will be installed in his home in Vermont. He must return to court on June 7, 2016 for a pre-trial hearing.

Essex Assistant District Attorney Erin Bellavia represented the Commonwealth.
