SANDWICH, MA — The Cape Cod Air Force Station will soon officially be part of the Space Force.
The station will be renamed the Cape Cod Space Force Station during a renaming ceremony Friday, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. The base, which is part of Joint Base Cape Cod, is home to the 6th Space Warning Squadron. Space Force officials told WCVB News the squadron will continue providing missile warnings, missile defense and space surveillance data to the United States and its allies.
"Renaming Air Force installations where space operations is the primary mission more closely reflects the overall mission of the base," Lt. Gen. Stephen Whiting, commander of Space Operations Command, told WCVB. "Renaming these installations is critical to building a distinct culture and identity for the Space Force."
