5 Things You Need To Know Today in Framingham: February 9

Schools are back in session after a 4-day weekend, due to two snow days. Today is the 100th day of school! And, it's Mardi Gras today!

Today is the 100th day of school!

Temperatures dropped overnight so some roads may be slick this morning. Motorists please watch for students at the bus stops.

And the Town of Framingham still has an emergency parking ban in effect through 4 p.m. today.

When a snow emergency is declared, parking is prohibited on all arterial roads in town. These roads are posted with red and white signs. View a list of arterial roads.

2. It’s Mardi Gras! Also known as Fat Tuesday, it is the last day of feasting before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, tomorrow, Feb. 10

3. Framingham Selectmen are scheduled to meet tonight at 7 in the Memorial Building.

The Board is expected to take a second vote on a citizen petition for a special Town Meeting.

Last week, the Board voted 3-2 not to call a special Town Meeting, after Deborah Butler submitted enough signatures. Selectmen Michael Bower, Jason Smith, and Laurie Lee voted against the petition.

But according to town leaders, after receiving a legal opinion, Selectmen believe there is time to hold the new Special Town Meeting within the Special Town Meeting already called and scheduled for Feb. 23.

4. FLYERS in action:

  • Framingham High alpine ski team has a meet scheduled for today.
  • Girls basketball will host Wellesley at 6:45 p.m.
  • Boys basketball will travel to Wellesley for a game. Tip-off at 6:30 p.m.

MUSTANGS in action:

  • Marian High boys basketball will host Austin Prep at 6:30 p.m.

5. Today at 9 a.m. in the Ablondi room at the Memorial Buildingbegins registration for the Framingham Public Library’s Adventures in Learning program. There will be an open house for the program, which is a partnership with Framingham State University, from 9 to 11 a.m. Online registration is also available.

And tonight at 7 in the Nevins Conference room at the Memorial Building, Framingham resident Libby Franck will lead a discussion for the Library’s book club. The focus is on The Secret History of Wonder Woman by author Jill LePore.

BONUS: Framingham Town Clerk Valerie Mulvey reminds residents that Wednesday, Feb. 10 is the deadline to register to vote if they want to participate in the Massachusetts Presidential Primary on March 1.

Tomorrow, February 10 is also the deadline for registered voters who wish to change their party enrollment either to another party or to “unenrolled,” which is commonly referred to as “independent.”
