“This is my decision, this is our basketball staff’s decision,” said Griffin, according to NBA.com. “I’m not taking a poll; my job is to lead a franchise and to lead an organization to where it needs to go. I’m in the locker room. I’ve done this for a long time and I know what it’s supposed to feel like. I didn’t need to ask questions.”
After graduating from Framingham South High School, Blatt, a point guard, played hoop at Princeton University.
In 2012, Blatt, 55, coached the Russian national team to the bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in London. Blatt has spent 20 years abroad coaching in Israel, Russia, Turkey, and Greece.
Blatt was the first coach to come from Europe and head an NBA team.
The Cavs were 83-40 in his tenure. They finished 33-49 and missed the playoffs for the fourth straight season prior to his hiring.
“David is a great basketball coach and a special person,’’ Griffin said in a 2014 press release announcing his hiring. “His abilities to communicate, to build relationships with his players and to foster winning environments at several stops throughout Europe and across the highest levels of International competition speaks for itself. He brings unbridled passion, energy and creativity to his craft. These qualities have enabled David to reach a level of success that is truly unique.”
