FRAMINGHAM, MA—Cinco de Mayo is Thursday, and while the holiday is minor in Mexico, Americans have made it one of their own.
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. However, it wasn't until June 2005 that the U.S. Congress called on President George W. Bush to recognize the historical significance of Cinco de Mayo.

While the holiday does not have a direct significant effect on American History, it also recognizes the effect of the American Civil War on Latinos living in what is now the Southwest, according to Time.com.
