Do More Than 'Spring Forward' This Weekend, Fire Officials Say

FRAMINGHAM, MA — As the nation springs forward this weekend, local fire officials are asking Massachusetts residents to do more than just set clocks one hour ahead.

State Fire Marshal Ostroskey this week urged residents to also check on things like smoke detector batteries and carbon monoxide detectors — life-saving objects that we sometimes overlook in everyday life.

"Working smoke alarms are key to surviving a fire," Ostroskey said in a news release. "Unless you have newer alarms with 10-year sealed batteries, this is a good time to replace the alkaline batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms."

Ostroskey also reminded that Massachusetts has programs to help seniors and children with staying fire and carbon monoxide safe. The state's Student Awareness of Fire Education and Senior SAFE program offers free alarm installation, testing, and battery replacement. All local fire departments, from Natick to Framingham to Worcester, received state funding this year for these programs.

Other home safety items to check off during the Daylight Saving Time switch:

• Change air filters in your home's heating system
• Make sure you have your home emergency kit stocked
• Check trees around your home for rot or storm damage
