Flyers Sprint Past Wildcats For Second Victory of the Season

Senior captain Paul Halberstadt and senior Nick Benoit had a strong meet to lead the Flyers, said head coach Chris Collins.

The Framingham High boys indoor track team defeated the Wildcats of Weymouth 53-47 Thursday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

The Flyers are now 2-2 on the season.

Paul Halberstad won the long jump (18 feet and 11 inches), finished second in the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches) and had a personal best in the 55 hurdles, sprinting across the line in 8.6 seconds.

Halberstad also had a 55.7 leg in the 4X400 relay. The victory in that relay, sealed the Flyers second win of the season, said Collins.

Benoit won the dash in 6.98 seconds and won the 300 event in 38.36 seconds.

Senior Ben Kirchman won the 55-meter hurdles in a state-qualifying time of 8.36 seconds.

Senior Marc Umumbu won the shot put event for Framingham, with a throw of 49-feet, 9-inches, which is a state qualifying distance.

Senior captain Mike McDonald won the 1,000-meter event in 2:41.70 seconds. The time qualified him for the state meet, said Collins.

Rising star Ben Burgess, a freshman, ran a huge 10:34 minute 2-mile to finish in second place, said Collins.

The 4x400 relay won the meet for the Flyers in the end, said Collins.

On the relay was Halberstadt, senior Chris Barone, junior Brendan Retalic and senior Zach Modica 12th). They ran a season best 3:43.02, said Collins.

Next up for the Flyers is a meet against Newton North on January 21.
