FRAMINGHAM, MA — You'll have to endure the summer heat without the relief of an air-conditioned movie theater for another few weeks, if not longer.

On Thursday, the AMC Theatres chain pushed back the reopening of cinemas until mid-to-late August. The theaters, including the AMC Dine-In in Framingham, were supposed to reopen on July 30.

Movie theaters across Massachusetts have been closed since March when coronavirus ramped up, and almost no new movies have been released since then. AMC said Thursday that it is delaying the reopening due to the lack of new releases.

"This new timing reflects currently expected release dates for much anticipated blockbusters like Warner Bros.' 'Tenet' and Disney’s 'Mulan,' as well as release dates for several other new movies," the company said in a news release.

Regal, which has a cinema at the Solomon Pond Mall in Marlborough, has not announced a firm reopening date yet. Same goes for Showcase Cinemas, which operates theaters in Worcester and elsewhere. The company has opened a pop-up drive-in theater at Patriot Place in Foxborough.
