LETTER: McGrath Says He's Been 'Building' The Massachusetts Republican Party

Framingham resident Ed McGrath: 'I will not avoid the responsibilities of my office for political expediency.

I should not be surprised that Marty Lamb would stoop to inaccurate email and social media attacks on me and the Republican Party. Having given money to Ed Markey and Tom Daschle, it’s only natural he would copy their campaign tactics. But facts are stubborn things.

As a member of the Republican State Committee, I have pledged to fulfill the duties of my office.

Pursuant to General Laws c. 56 section 40, the State Committee must approve of an organization’s use of the term Republican so as to protect the Party’s brand and those who want to support organizations that they believe are promoting Republican values. General Laws c. 52 section 10 grants the State Committee the authority to adopt policies and procedures to implement its policies and the Republican State Committee has adopted Bylaw Article 8 to protect the public and the Republican brand.

The truth is the organization in question refused to provide the information required of the state party of all organizations who ask for a permit. All approved organizations including 15 approved on January 20, 2016 have provided the information. Two organizations were granted a temporary charter and permit as they are still providing the information. In fact, the organization in question provided the information as recently as 2013. The State Committee spent more than a year trying to resolve this matter and in May of 2015 the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Republican Party, on which I serve, voted unanimously togrant a temporary permit to the organization in an effort to preserve the organization while the matter was sorted out. On June 24, 2015, the organization wrote the Executive Committee and rejected the temporary permit.

I have spent most of my free time building the Republican Party in Massachusetts for the last 15 years. I will not avoid the responsibilities of my office for political expediency.
