For MA CMOs, Rising Demand for CGT is Shaping the Future

Massachusetts is home and has ties to many contract manufacturing organizations, most of which played an important role in one way or another during the COVID-19 pandemic — whether directly by producing COVID-19 vaccines and treatments, or indirectly by continuing to supply the country with needed medications.

COVID-19 put an immense strain on the supply chain, and CMOs showcased their adaptability and resilience in maintaining and shifting operations to meet demand.

And still, pharma companies are increasing their reliance on CMOs for quality manufacturing. PWC estimates the CMO market to increase from $99B in 2018 to $158B by 2025.

To maintain flexibility and meet the rising demand for cell and gene therapies, CMOs should focus on the following three areas:

1. Keeping facilities ready to meet rising product demands or adapting to be able to produce new kinds of products. This includes keeping facilities and equipment updated and validated to meet all requirements.

2. Differentiate from the competition to capitalize on the expected market growth.

3. Find and retain top talent, including scientists and engineers with proven abilities to meet quality demands.
