FRAMINGHAM, MA - Earlier this week, Colorado-based sporting goods retailer Sports Authority filed for bankruptcy and announced it will be closing 140 stores across the country.

Now it looks like the Shoppers World location will be one of three stores in Massachusetts to close, according to bankruptcy filings obtained by the Wall Street Journal.

The other two Massachusetts stores that look likely to close, according to the report, are in Danvers and Holyoke.

Sports Authority could continue as a smaller operation or sell their stores to a competitor, according to consumerist.com.

One of the competitors brought up was Dick’s, which it stated could buy stores to eliminate competition.

There is a Dick’s Sporting Goods in Natick, less than a mile from Sports Authority on Route 9 East.

In a statement on the company’s website, Sports Authority CEO Michael Foss said they have decided to “utilize the Chapter 11 process to implement a financial and operational restructuring that we believe is necessary to help us become an even better place for our customers to shop for sporting goods.”
