Storm May Bring 'Freezing Drizzle' On New Year's Day, Weekend

The area between Framingham and Worcester could see up to a tenth of an inch of ice starting Friday.

FRAMINGHAM, MA — The New Year may bring a new hazard to the region.

A storm system will bring a wintry mix to the region on Friday evening, and that includes the potential for ice accumulation, according to the National Weather Service.

Beginning around 7 p.m. Friday, an inch or less of snow could fall between Worcester and Framingham. But a round of "freezing drizzle" will mix with the snow, and forecast indicate up to a one-tenth of an inch of ice could accumulate by Saturday morning.

The weather service has issued a hazardous weather outlook due to the potential for dangerous ice.

"A few systems may bring freezing drizzle and precipitation to parts of southern [New England] this weekend," the weather service said in a tweet Wednesday. "It only takes a small amount of freezing drizzle to create hazardous road conditions."
